The therapist comes up with a plan for the patient’s treatment while the OTA puts them into action. The OT guides them and tells them about the overall framework. The assistants execute the plan working with each individual and give them the confidence to overcome difficulties and inhibitions.

Working with Clients

People who suffer from a disability or an illness or have gone through some injury need therapy to regain their cognitive and sensory skills. This is where the therapists and their assistants come in. The assistants need clear guidance from the therapist to formulate a plan for each patient. People of all ages come in to practice therapy. The Occupational Therapy Assistant observes each person’s progress under their care and reports it to the therapist. They also work with people who have dementia by changing behavior patterns. The wellness of the people under the care is their priority. Each patient is different, and they require separate treatment.

Change in Treatment

The disease of each client varies per person. So, the ways and patterns change with the individual. In the case of down syndrome Independence, is given importance, and to achieve it, they focus on cultivating it through the activities that need self-care. They practice eating, playing, and taking care of themselves on their own. When working with a physically challenged person, mobility is the way. Every day the patients undergo physical and mental challenges to improve themselves. The assistants have to be verbal in the treatment as the patients need encouragement and support to boost their self-esteem and believe that they can do it. When it comes to the body, the developments will be slow.

Consistency in Therapy

The exercises must focus on the part of the body that needs it. Interventions and reconditioning have to be done regularly for a steady improvement. The OTA conducts therapy in different settings, including hospitals, schools, homes, recovery and rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, workplaces, etc. They should make sure that the clients do the activities daily without any delay or interruptions. The monitoring of a well-conducted plan is vital in the treatment of the client.

The OTA works based on the results. Even from the initial phase of the recovery of the client, a target is set. If the patient fails to achieve it within a stipulated time, they alter the method and check the progress. They can work full time and also as part-time employees in workplaces.
